Mineral in ‘Nerd’s Eye View’: How Does the GDPR Affect US Advisors?
The General Data Protection Regulation – a new law aimed at protecting the data of EU citizens – goes into effect this Friday, May 25. A lot of advisory firms in the US are wondering how it applies to them.
Turns out there’s no simple answer to that question. It depends on a number of factors, including your client list, marketing efforts, language on your website, and more.
The only thing that’s for certain is that you cannot just assume the law does not apply to you. The GDPR is designed to protect people in the EU from having their personal data misused by websites, regardless of whether that site is maintained by a company in America, Africa, or Australia. Take some time to read up on the subject and find out if you could be subject to the law’s steep penalties, or if you’re in the clear.
